I plan to write/film a long thing eventually explaining why I think Movie 43 is genius, but the short and light version iis that I like it not because it's a GOOD movie, but because it's a SHIT movie which is entirely self aware that it's SHIT. The version with the Dennis Quaid storyline works because it's about a pathetic, down on his luck Hollywood screenwriter pitching god awful ideas to an executive out of desperation. The film is entirely aware that the sketches are total garbage, and it's part of the story. It's about the desperation of talentless hacks in Hollywood and what lengths they will go to to find success. The whole movie is about Hollywood folk whoring themselves out in degrading and embarrassing ways, both on and off camera. If you look into the production history you'll see that it took several years to make the film and that they basically guilted stars to appear in it or called in favors. The film is absolutely about Hollywood exploitation and is, in my opinion, a critique of it. They even went to the effort of making two different versions of it with completely different storylines, one for the US and one for international markets. I need to watch the international version again and think about it, but my gut feeling is that it's a commentary on European Big Brother surveillance and internet censorship laws and how people in power will paint the internet to be an indecent boogie man which must be controlled or else it will destroy humanity. A lot of time and effort was put into making such an obviously awful movie, I can't help but think there was a reason for it.
It's not an entertaining movie. It is art.
